Frequently Asked Questions About Flower Essences
Here I’ve gathered some of the most common questions about flower essences. If you have other questions, please feel free to write to me — I’ll be happy to share more information.
What are flower essences?
Flower essences are gentle natural preparations that carry the subtle energetic imprint of a flower in water. They are used to support emotional balance and inner wellbeing.
The idea behind flower essences is that each flower carries a unique energy or vibration. When we take a flower essence, this energy can help us gently shift emotional patterns and support more balance and clarity.
You can imagine it like tuning a radio. When your emotional state feels like static, a flower essence helps bring the signal back to a clear, harmonious frequency.
How do flower essences work?
Everything in nature has its own vibration or frequency. You may notice how being in a forest, near the sea, or in a garden can make you feel calmer or happier. This is one way we naturally respond to the energy of nature.
In a similar way, flower essences work with the subtle energetic qualities of flowers. When we feel out of balance — for example anxious, angry, lonely, or overwhelmed — a flower essence can help support a return to a more balanced and peaceful state.
How are flower essences prepared?
Flower essences are traditionally prepared by placing fresh blossoms in pure water and leaving them in sunlight for a period of time. During this process, the water absorbs the energetic imprint of the flower.
The physical plant material is not present in the final essence. Once the infusion is ready, it is preserved with a small amount of brandy, apple cider vinegar, or glycerin.
In what situations can flower essences help?
Flower essences support emotional well-being by gently addressing feelings such as fear, anxiety, discouragement, stress, burnout, uncertainty, and overwhelm. They help transform unhelpful emotional patterns like oversensitivity and low confidence, while also supporting recovery after challenging experiences. Their aim is to restore balance and inner peace. I like to say there is a flower essence for every emotion and every feeling we encounter throughout life.
How are flower essences taken?
Flower essences are usually taken orally — a few drops under the tongue or added to a glass of water.
They can also be used as a spray or sometimes applied to the skin.
How long should I take flower essences?
The duration depends on your individual situation. Some people take them for a few days, while others may use them for several weeks or months when working with deeper or long-standing emotional patterns.
How do I know which flower essence is right for me?
A flower essence practitioner can help choose a blend of different essences that best supports your current emotional state.
You can also begin exploring flower essences on your own by learning about the qualities of different flowers and noticing what resonates with you.
Are flower essences safe?
Flower essences are generally safe, non-toxic, and non-addictive for adults, children, and pets. They are highly diluted preparations designed to support emotional well-being.
While no serious side effects are known, some individuals may experience a temporary intensification of symptoms—sometimes referred to as a ‘healing response.’ As the essences help release emotional blocks or past traumas, this may involve brief periods of heightened emotions, fatigue, or mild headaches, typically lasting a day or so.
Flower essences are not a substitute for psychotherapy or professional medical care. Rather, they are complementary, holistic, and energetic tools that support emotional well-being.
Are flower essences the same as Bach flower remedies?
Bach Flower Remedies are a specific system of flower essences created by Dr. Edward Bach and are widely used around the world.
All Bach remedies are flower essences, but not all flower essences belong to the Bach system. Today there are many other flower essence systems and producers. In my practice, I work with Bach Flower essences as well as essences from a variety of other systems.
Who created flower essences?
The modern system of flower essences was developed by Dr. Edward Bach (1886–1936), an English physician, bacteriologist, and homeopath. He created the 38 Bach Flower Remedies and introduced them as a way to support emotional wellbeing.
While Dr. Bach developed the modern system, the idea that flowers can support emotional healing is very ancient. Many cultures — including the ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, and Chinese — recognized the healing qualities of plants and flowers.
What is the difference between essential oils and flower essences?
Essential oils are concentrated extracts from plants that contain their aromatic and chemical compounds. They are often used for their scent and physical therapeutic properties.
Flower essences are different. They are highly diluted preparations that work with the subtle energetic qualities of flowers rather than their physical components. Unlike essential oils, flower essences are mostly odorless, sometimes smelling only of their preservative—typically brandy or vinegar.
Both flower essences and essential oils are beneficial for overall well-being and may be used on their own or in combination.
